About the Project

HALO-FORCE explores the potential of three wild edible halophytes, Salicornia spp., Salsola soda and Beta maritima, as climate-resilient crops able to make agriculture more sustainable while contributing to the conservation and the restoration of Mediterranean wetland ecosystems.

The project draws on advanced technologies, among them remote sensing, artificial intelligence, multi-omics approaches and sustainability assessment. It brings together twelve partners from eight Mediterranean countries and was officially launched at an online kick-off meeting on 29 April 2026.

Key Objectives

  • Explore three wild edible halophytes, Salicornia spp., Salsola soda and Beta maritima, as climate-resilient crops.
  • Identify and validate high-performing plant ecotypes, and develop innovative agri-food products from them.
  • Support climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and the diversification of Mediterranean food systems on salt-affected land.
