About the Project

Sustain Vitis is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Industrial Doctoral Network coordinated by Fondazione Edmund Mach in Italy, bringing together seven beneficiaries and fourteen associated partners from six countries. It sets out to strengthen the sustainability of the wine value chain by training fifteen doctoral candidates at the interface between academic research and industry.

The work is structured around four axes: advanced grapevine breeding and gene editing, precision viticulture and agroecology, sulphite-free and alcohol-free winemaking together with alternative packaging, and reduction of the environmental footprint. Aligned with the Farm to Fork strategy of the European Green Deal, the project combines hands-on training with intersectoral secondments, to prepare a new generation of professionals for sustainable viticulture and winemaking.

Key Objectives

  • Train fifteen doctoral candidates at the interface between academic research and the wine industry.
  • Advance grapevine breeding and gene editing for a more sustainable value chain.
  • Develop precision viticulture and agroecological practices in the vineyard.
  • Work on sulphite-free and alcohol-free winemaking, and on alternative packaging.
  • Reduce the environmental footprint of the wine value chain.
