Official registration trials — DUS and VCU — still rely heavily on visual notation by expert panels. That approach is labour-intensive, hard to replicate between examiners and difficult to defend when a decision is contested. As candidate volumes grow, manual scoring becomes the bottleneck of the whole registration pipeline.

Digital phenotyping standardises the measurement. Repeated UAV flights over the plot network, analysed by Hiphen Intelligence, extract quantitative descriptors — canopy cover dynamics, plant height, heading and flowering timing, ground-cover uniformity — with a documented, reproducible protocol.
